The same principles are applied across industries including machine safety, mining, railways, automotive, nuclear and medical devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the heart of functional safety management sits a document that is rarely described as exciting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Safety Requirements Specification (SRS).<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may not be glamorous, but it is one of the most important documents in the lifecycle of a Safety Instrumented System (SIS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SRS defines the requirements for the SIS and its Safety Instrumented Functions. And when we say&nbsp;<strong>requirements<\/strong>, we mean a lot of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each SIF can have dozens of data fields covering everything from the initiating condition and trip setpoint to response time, reset arrangements and the required safe state. For a large project, the resulting SRS can easily run to hundreds of pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why does this apparently enormous document matter so much?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Is the SRS Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three particularly important reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. It Defines What the SIS Must Do<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most fundamental purpose of the SRS is to ensure that the requirements for each safety function are&nbsp;<strong>clearly defined, documented and easy to find<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider some seemingly simple questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What should cause the trip?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What setpoint should be used?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is a time delay required?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What should happen after the trip?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How should the SIS be reset?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens if there is a power failure?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happens when an instrument fails?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the required response time?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These requirements may originate from different studies, specifications and engineering documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without a clear SRS, important requirements can become scattered across the project documentation, making them difficult to find, interpret and maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SRS brings them together into a structured specification of&nbsp;<strong>what the SIS is required to do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. It Provides the Basis for SIS Validation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SRS is also fundamental to&nbsp;<strong>SIS \u9a57\u8b49\uff08Validation\uff09<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Validation asks a simple but critical question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does the as-built SIS actually meet the requirements?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot reliably validate something that has not been clearly specified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SRS therefore provides the reference against which the implemented SIS can be checked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the requirement says one thing but the implemented system does another, the discrepancy needs to be identified and resolved before the SIS can be considered fit for purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. It Preserves the Design Intent<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An SIS can remain in service for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engineers who originally designed it may eventually move to other projects, retire or simply no longer be available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, someone may need to modify a trip, replace a device or investigate an unexpected behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, the SRS becomes more than a project document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It becomes a record of the original design intent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A well-maintained SRS allows engineers to understand not only what the SIS does, but why it was designed that way in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware and Software: What&#8217;s Actually in the SRS?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Functional safety standards such as&nbsp;<strong>IEC 61508 and IEC 61511<\/strong>&nbsp;require the safety requirements to address both hardware and software aspects of the SIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, however, the requirements are often managed through different documents and by different parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware Requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people talk about an SRS, they are often referring primarily to the hardware requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These can include requirements for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sensors and transmitters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Logic solvers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Final elements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setpoints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Response times<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voting arrangements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diagnostics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Failure behaviour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reset arrangements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Environmental requirements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Development of these requirements is normally led by the engineering contractor responsible for the process and SIS design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Software Requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The software side is concerned with the&nbsp;<strong>application program<\/strong>\u2014the project-specific logic used to implement the safety functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These requirements are often captured separately in a document such as a&nbsp;<strong>Functional Analysis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Functional Analysis can define the software requirements and the logic needed to achieve them, sitting somewhere between specification and implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may also address additional technical requirements relating to areas such as reliability and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This work is typically undertaken by the System Integrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important point is that the hardware and software requirements must ultimately work together to deliver the intended safety function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traceability: The Requirement Behind the Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most important\u2014and frequently overlooked\u2014aspects of an SRS is&nbsp;<strong>traceability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every important data item should have a clear audit trail back to its source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Because the SRS doesn&#8217;t exist in isolation.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its requirements are derived from information generated throughout the safety lifecycle, including studies such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HAZOP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LOPA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SIL Assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SIL \u9a57\u8b49\uff08SIL Verification\uff09<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cause &amp; Effect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Process design documentation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instrument data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other engineering specifications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During verification, we need to be able to answer a fundamental question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where did this requirement come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the answer requires searching through hundreds of pages of project documentation, verification becomes slow, difficult and error-prone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the SRS data is directly linked to its source, verification becomes much more straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the strongest arguments for moving beyond spreadsheets and disconnected documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Not Just Use Excel?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excel is familiar, flexible and available on almost every engineering desktop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why not simply use it to build an SRS?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a small project, it may be perfectly adequate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as the number of SIFs and requirements grows, maintaining a large spreadsheet can become increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A purpose-built SRS application can provide capabilities that are difficult to manage reliably in a conventional spreadsheet, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automatic Data Population<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information can be automatically transferred from source data, such as SIF lists generated during LOPA or SIL Verification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Completeness Checks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Missing or incomplete fields can be automatically identified rather than discovered during a late-stage review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consistency Checks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system can identify data that appears inconsistent or unreasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Linked Requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fields that should contain the same information can be linked, reducing the risk of conflicting data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traceability<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Requirements can remain connected to their source, making verification faster and more transparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change Management<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changes can be tracked and reviewed, providing a clearer history of how the SRS has evolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is not simply a better-looking SRS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is a more controlled, traceable and maintainable safety requirements process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Documents to Connected Safety Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the future of SRS management becomes particularly interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The information required to build an SRS already exists across much of the functional safety lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LOPA identifies initiating events and protection requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SIL assessment determines the required level of risk reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SIL verification checks whether the proposed design can achieve the required SIL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SRS then defines what the SIS must actually do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than treating these as completely separate activities, there is an opportunity to&nbsp;<strong>connect the data across the safety lifecycle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a SIF identified during LOPA could become the starting point for the corresponding SRS entry, with relevant information carried forward automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reduces duplicate data entry, improves consistency and creates a stronger audit trail from&nbsp;<strong>hazard identification through to SIS implementation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SRS
