  • INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

PHA150 is a self-study training course on Control Systems HAZOP (CHAZOP), presented by xSeriCon. This is a modular course: you can select and study the modules you are interested in, although the course will be more effective if you complete all modules in order.

The course is interactive, and you will be provided with an xSeriCon tutor to discuss your learning and any questions you have. Exercises are included in each module: they are there to deepen your learning and confirm your understanding. Suggested answers are provided at the end of each module.

This course on CHAZOP is designed for professionals in the process industry and assumes you have at least a little previous knowledge of process-related hazard and risk management.

All the key concepts will be introduced and explained, so do not worry if you are not experienced in this area.

MODULE 1: Assessing the risks of control system failure

  • INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Concepts of CHAZOP
To understand how and when to use it, we need to know the background issues: What is the objective and scope of CHAZOP? Why are we performing CHAZOP? What information and what types of control system risk analysis are available, and which is the best analysis tool for each situation? These topics, which are fundamental to a correct application of CHAZOP, are covered in this module.

Exercise: Types of control system analysis
The following questions relate to the 5 types of control system analysis discussed in the course: • FMEA, FMEDA, FMECA o FMEA: Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (failure rate and repair time identified for system/sub system/ component) o FMEDA: where automatic system fault diagnostics is considered o FMECA: where an assessment of failure criticality for system/sub system/ component is included • Continuous CHAZOP • Batch mode CHAZOP • Software integrity and criticality analysis • Human Factors Analysis (HFA)
