Alarm Management for Safer, More Effective Process Operations
An effective alarm system should help operators recognise abnormal situations, understand what requires attention, and take appropriate action before a process deviation develops into a more serious event.
In practice, many process plants accumulate excessive, poorly configured, or ineffective alarms over time. Nuisance alarms, chattering alarms, standing alarms and alarm floods can overload operators and make it difficult to identify the alarms that genuinely require immediate attention.
xSeriCon helps process industry clients establish, rationalise and maintain alarm systems in accordance with recognised industry practices, including ISA-18.2, IEC 62682, and EEMUA 191.
Our approach combines process safety engineering, operational experience and practical workshop methods to develop alarm systems that are meaningful, manageable and sustainable. And our powerful software: Vizop專為 HAZOP 與警報管理(Alarm Management) 而設計。
Common Alarm Management Challenges
Alarm performance can deteriorate as plants evolve. New equipment, process modifications, control system changes and operating experience can gradually increase the number of alarms and reduce their effectiveness.
Common problems include:
- Alarm floods – large numbers of alarms occurring within a short period, making it difficult for operators to identify the most important conditions.
- Nuisance alarms – alarms that occur frequently without requiring meaningful operator intervention.
- Chattering alarms – alarms that repeatedly activate and clear around a setpoint.
- Standing alarms – alarms that remain active for extended periods and may become normalised by operators.
- Poor alarm prioritisation – excessive use of high-priority alarms can make genuinely critical alarms harder to recognise.
- Inappropriate alarm setpoints – alarm limits that do not adequately reflect the process operating envelope or required operator response.
- Duplicate or consequential alarms – multiple alarms generated by the same underlying process event.
- Alarm system drift – gradual deterioration of alarm performance following plant modifications and changes in operating practices.
The objective is not simply to reduce the number of alarms. The objective is to ensure that each alarm has a clear purpose and provides useful information to the operator.
Alarm Management Lifecycle
Alarm management should be treated as an ongoing lifecycle rather than a one-time alarm rationalisation exercise.
The ISA-18.2 and IEC 62682 approach provides a structured framework covering activities from alarm philosophy and identification through rationalisation, implementation, operation, maintenance, monitoring and management of change.
xSeriCon can support clients across the lifecycle:
完善的警報管理系統核心在於 警報哲學文件(APD)。 該文件詳細定義整個警報系統的設計理念、操作方式與管理策略, 並說明其效能衡量與優化方法。 APD 通常篇幅龐大,且在任何警報管理工作開始前,都是必備的基礎文件。
xSeriCon 的顧問團隊曾為多家客戶與現場編制 APD, 憑藉多年經驗,我們能為您提供以下服務:
- Develop a new site-specific Alarm Philosophy Document
- Review and update an existing APD
- Perform an APD gap assessment
- Define alarm priorities and classification
- Establish alarm performance targets and KPIs
- Develop alarm management and governance procedures
- Provide templates for future alarm management activities
The Alarm Philosophy Document: Why Generic Approaches Fail
A site-specific Alarm Philosophy is essential for effective alarm management. Discover why generic approaches can fail and how a tailored APD can improve alarm performance, KPIs and plant safety.
During a rationalisation workshop, the team can consider:
- What abnormal condition does the alarm indicate?
- What is the consequence if the condition is not addressed?
- Is an operator response required?
- What action should the operator take?
- How much time is available for the response?
- What should the alarm priority be?
- What should the alarm setpoint be?
- Are deadbands or delays appropriate?
- Is another alarm already providing the same information?

An alarm flood occurs when an operator receives more alarms than can reasonably be assessed and acted upon within the available time.
During abnormal situations, this can become particularly problematic: a single process upset may generate a cascade of related alarms, making it difficult to distinguish the initiating condition from subsequent consequences.
Alarm management can address this through a combination of:
- Alarm rationalisation
- Appropriate prioritisation
- Setpoint optimisation
- Deadband and delay configuration
- Alarm shelving strategies
- Chattering alarm reduction
- Standing alarm management
- Advanced alarm techniques
- Operator response analysis
- Performance monitoring
The goal is to make the alarm system more useful when operators need it most, rather than simply reducing the total alarm count.
1. Alarm Philosophy
Define the principles, rules, priorities, responsibilities, performance targets and management processes governing the site’s alarm system.
2. Alarm Identification
Identify potential alarms based on process hazards, operating requirements and the information required by operators.
3. Alarm Rationalisation
Systematically review each alarm to determine whether it is required, what condition it represents, what the operator should do, and how it should be configured.
4. Detailed Alarm Design
Define alarm parameters such as setpoints, priorities, deadbands, delays and associated operator response requirements.
5. Implementation
Translate the rationalised alarm requirements into the plant’s DCS, SCADA or other control system.
6. Operation & Maintenance
Ensure alarms remain functional and meaningful during normal plant operation.
7. Monitoring & Assessment
Measure alarm system performance using appropriate KPIs and identify areas requiring improvement.
8. Management of Change
Ensure new, modified or deleted alarms are controlled through an appropriate change process.
9. Audit & Continuous Improvement
Periodically review alarm performance and the effectiveness of the alarm management process.
Connecting Alarm Management with HAZOP and Process Safety
Alarm management should not be considered independently from process safety studies.
HAZOP studies identify hazardous deviations and safeguards within the process. Where an alarm is intended to provide a warning and require operator intervention, its purpose and required operator response should be consistent with the underlying process risk.
For new projects, xSeriCon can integrate alarm-related considerations into the broader process safety workflow, including:
HAZOP → Alarm Identification → Alarm Rationalisation → LOPA / Risk Assessment → Alarm Implementation → Performance Monitoring
Efficient Alarm Rationalisation with Vizop
Large alarm rationalisation projects can involve thousands of alarms and substantial amounts of engineering data.
xSeriCon uses Vizop to support structured HAZOP and alarm management workflows, helping teams capture decisions, maintain consistency and generate project documentation efficiently.
Vizop can help teams:
- Review and document large numbers of alarms
- Record alarm rationalisation decisions
- Maintain structured alarm data
- Search and navigate project information quickly
- Capture actions and follow-up items
- Support workshop collaboration
