Smoothing Out the Stress in Your PHA Workshop

Is your PHA Workshops Slow and Challenged?

Do you like your peanut butter smooth, or crunchy?

I’m definitely a crunchy peanut butter person — but when it comes to running a PHA workshop, whether HAZOP, SIL, or Alarm Rationalization, I like it smooth and stress-free.

A lot of that comes down to preparation: understanding the scope of work, getting the Terms of Reference (ToR) aligned between stakeholders, marking up the P&IDs, and setting up the worksheet properly before the workshop begins.

But no matter how well prepared we are, challenges will always appear once the workshop starts.

And this is where the software we use to capture workshop findings can make a surprisingly big difference.

Small inefficiencies in a PHA app may seem minor at first — but when repeated hundreds or thousands of times over a multi-day workshop, they become a real source of distraction, fatigue, and lost productivity.

Wouldn’t it be easier if the app helped us to:

  • Automatically transfer HAZOP data into Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)?
  • Navigate quickly between worksheets, P&IDs, and action items?
  • Jump away to check something, then intelligently return us to where we left off?
  • Search for similar issues previously discussed, then copy them across in just a couple of clicks?
  • Compare two different HAZOP nodes side-by-side and transfer information easily between them?
  • Duplicate a HAZOP node for a similar system, then automatically update the tag numbers?
  • Track which copied or imported items have already been reviewed?

And what if we could go even further?

Imagine being able to:

  • Dictate directly into the worksheet using voice input;
  • Allow both the chairman and scribe to view and edit the worksheet simultaneously;
  • Enter equipment names and tag numbers once on the P&ID, then insert them into the worksheet instantly.

Most of us naturally stay within the comfort zone of familiar tools — spreadsheets, legacy PHA software, and established workflows. And honestly, we’re all busy enough already without stopping to ask whether there’s a better way.

But the old saying “work smarter, not harder” still applies — especially in process safety.

At xSeriCon, we’ve been asking ourselves how PHA workshops could be smoother, faster, and less stressful for the people running them. That thinking is what led to the development of Vizop — our modern HAZOP and Alarm Management platform designed around real workshop workflows.

Because sometimes the biggest productivity gains don’t come from working harder.
They come from removing friction.
